Punya Foundation, in association with Gorkhali Production and Kirat Cultural Association, Australia organised a “shrandhanjali sabha” on June 25, 2022, to pay tribute to late Dr Rai. The event took place at Fremont Park Playground at Elizabeth in South Australia.
The program was attended by over hundred resettled Bhutanese in South Australia and a number of representatives from various organisations to pay tribute to Dr Rai.
The event observed a minute silence, attendees lit 108 candles and incense sticks, offered flowers and khadas to Dr Rai’s portrait. Kirant and Hindu mantras were chanted by Kirant guru Buddhi Man Chamling and pundit Tirtha Raj Poudyal respectively for Dr Rai’s soul to rest in peace.
Individuals close to Dr Rai, those who remembered his selfless health care service and who worked with him expressed gratefulness for his service to the Bhutanese refugees in Nepal. Among the speakers were Mr Khagendra Khatiwada, Mr Hari Sharma Poudyal, Mr Birkha Gurung, Mr Purna Lingden, Mr Mohan Bhattarai, Mr Narayan Bhattarai (recited a poem), and Mr Yati Raj Ajnabee. Among others, the major appreciations highlighted by speakers were:
- Generous healthcare support provided to the refugees at the hour of need
- Instrumental role played to establish healthcare centers in the refugee camps
- Strong advocate on patriotism
Mr Til Chand Sapkota, CEO of Punya Foundation thanked Gorkhali Production, Kirat Cultural Association, attendees, speakers, gurus and volunteers for their support and collaboration to celebrate Dr Rai’s life and his contribution.
