The Punya Foundation, in collaboration with community partners, is proud to host a Breast Cancer Awareness Program aimed at empowering and educating our community about the importance of early detection and healthy living. This initiative is funded by the Australian Government through Cancer Australia and encourages everyone to “Be Aware, Get Screened, and Stay Healthy.”
Breast cancer occurs when abnormal cells in the breast grow uncontrollably and may spread to other parts of the body. Although breast cancer is more common in women, particularly with increasing age, several factors can increase the risk, including family history, inherited genetic mutations, obesity, smoking, physical inactivity, and excessive alcohol consumption.
Early detection plays a critical role in successful treatment, as breast cancer may not show noticeable symptoms in its early stages. Some warning signs to be aware of include:
- A new lump or thickening in the breast or underarm
- Changes in the size or shape of the breast
- Skin dimpling or redness
- Changes to the nipple or unusual nipple discharge
- Persistent breast pain or swelling
Regular breast self-awareness and routine screening are essential for maintaining breast health. In Australia, women aged 40 years and over are eligible for a free screening mammogram every two years through BreastScreen Australia. Please listen to the podcast in Nepali language.
