My name is Dev Dhungel and I live in Salt Lake City, Utah, the USA. I was born in Upper Lapsibote, Gosling, Chirang district in Southern Bhutan. I was born as the eldest son in my family and still at young age, I had responsibility as a caretaker of the family. Because of need to engage in domestic and household activities to make living possible, I did not get chance to go to school. I had to overcome a lot of hurdles in my life. Once we fled Bhutan, I have worked as a manual labourer in Nepal to support my family to meet the daily needs. After resettlement in Salt Lake City in March 2008, I have experienced how difficult it is to survive without knowledge of English language. Struggling each day, now I am able to stand on my feet. Realising the faced difficulties were due to lack of education and especially English language, I want to help a child deprived of education due to financial constraints.
My father was a village Karbari and spent his life doing social works in Bhutan, in the Bhutanese Refugee camps in Nepal and also in Salt Lake City. His contribution to establish the Bhutanese Community in Utah is unforgettable. He is known for his service to the community and I am very much inspired by his motivation and would like to give continuity to his endeavours. I want the child I am sponsoring to be able to read, write and understand English language, to work hard to excel academically not to worry about financial limitations.
