South Australia adopted a stringent COVID-19 restriction policy when the pandemic began. Despite being referred to as one of the conservative states, it was successful to curb and contain the COVID-19 spread. However, currently South Australia is observing a rapid up-surge of COVID-19 cases.

Experts attribute 4 factors to the recent upsurge of COVID-19 cases in South Australia – the opening of interstate borders, lifting restrictions during Christmas and New Year, reinstating international travel and the national stand that most of the states have vaccinated over 90% of their eligible residents. Unfortunately, the recent outbreak in South Australia has severely impacted the resettled Bhutanese community. Yesterday, in desperation Mr LB Rai, the president of the community organisation BAASA, called for a need of volunteers to reach out basic needs to families in quarantine.

To help address the crisis, Punya Foundation Inc. held its emergency meeting today. The meeting resolved to collaborate with the BAASA:

  • 5 COVID coordinating marshal volunteered – Mr Tilchand Sapkota, Mr Khagendra Khatiwada, Mr Tek Bhandari, Mr Hari Adhikari and Pundit Santiram Upadhaya Dhakal.
  • Distribute PPE with an immediate effect to the families in isolation.
  • Set aside COVID-19 relief fund to distribute basic package and,
  • To assist families with online shopping who are technically disadvantaged.

Director of Programs, Mr Adhikari, informed that at the time of reporting, the volunteers have delivered PPEs to more than a dozen families as an emergency relief. The CEO, Mr Sapkota is in constant touch with Mr Rai, the chairperson of BAASA for further coordination and collaboration.

Australia is observing an unprecedented upsurge of COVID-19 with Victoria recording a record number of cases more than 51,000 just in a day. Punya Foundation Inc. wishes all families in quarantine and those infected a speedy recovery. It also pledges its collaboration and support.
