A successful Cancer Awareness, Prevention and Early Detection Program was held on 6 June 2026 at the Nepali Society of Northern Tasmania (NSNT) Community Building, bringing together 27 members of the Nepalese community. The session was facilitated by Mr Satish Khadka (registered nurse) and aimed to improve understanding of cancer prevention, screening, and available support services in Australia.

Delivered entirely in the Nepali language, the program created a culturally safe and accessible environment where participants could openly discuss health concerns and gain valuable information. Topics covered included cancer awareness, risk factors, warning signs, screening programs, and early detection strategies, with a particular focus on bowel, breast, cervical, and prostate cancers.

A pre-session survey revealed that many participants had limited knowledge of different types of cancer, symptoms, and available health services. Approximately 73% identified a lack of awareness as a major challenge, while cultural beliefs and stigma were also recognised as barriers to seeking information and participating in screening programs.

The session had a significant positive impact. Following the program, all participants reported improved awareness, with 40% rating their knowledge as “very good” and 60% as “good.” Participants also gained important information about Nepali-language cancer resources and interpreter services available through cancer support organisations.

A highlight of the event was a powerful presentation by Mr Krishna Timilsina, a cancer survivor and family member of a cancer survivor, who shared his personal journey and reinforced the importance of early diagnosis and open communication.

The program was made possible through the support and collaboration of Cancer Australia, Punya Foundation, and the Nepali Society of Northern Tasmania, whose commitment continues to strengthen health literacy and wellbeing within multicultural communities.
